Starting Again

It appears to have been a year since I’ve posted on this blog. The time’s just flown by and it seems like an easy thing to ignore, but I’ve sort of made a decision that having a blog may well become something that I’ll find useful in the not-too-distant future, so I’ve decided to resurrect this one, at least temporarily.

MakeSenseOfThis

So what have I been up to? Apart from working really hard, getting myself a girlfriend and spending far more money than anyone should on ridiculously expensive toys and gadgets, I’ve been setting up a couple of sites. The first is www.makesenseofthis.co.uk, which is all about writing, primarily stream of consciousness drivel and providing writing tips for people. I do this because I love it, but also I like to think that I’m pretty good at it – after all, I get paid to do it – and I just want to help other writers wherever I can, but I want to hear other people’s writing tips as well. It’s also something of an experiment.

I work in the internet marketing industry, primary as a copywriter for a search engine optimisation industry, although I’m currently learning conversion rate optimisation and playing around with some pay per click as well. I’m pretty sure that I’ve got the copywriting part down, although there’s always more to learn, but MakeSenseOfThis is more about finding out whether or not I actually know enough about SEO to get a site of my own some decent positions. Obviously I don’t have a whole agency’s resources to back me up, but I like to think that I know enough to get it somewhere.

The Big Lick

The other site I’ve made is the one for the rock club night that I’m still involved in, The Big Lick. This is more of a work in progress than the other one, primarily because I have people other than me that want to have their own input into it and that always makes things take longer. Thankfully, the WordPress plugin repository’s large enough that I can make it do most things without too much messing around with PHP, which is handy since I don’t really know very much about PHP.

The Big Lick site’s still a work in progress and I’ll probably re-skin it sometime in the next week or so.

That’s about it really. I’m far happier than I’ve ever been, I’m busy as hell and I’m pretty sure that every single thing I’ve gone through and everything I’m doing right now is making me a better copywriter. I still always want to learn and I think, all told, that that’s something that will never go away. I’ve got some other projects coming up and I’m sure that this blog will be something that fits in with that somewhere along the line.
