Urge to Learn: Rising
The last couple of weeks I’ve realised exactly why I was 23 before I left formal education: I just really like learning. I’ve recently got to the point in my copywriting job where I feel that although there’s always more to learn as a writer, I need to be learning more. That’s the advantage of working in internet marketing though, I suppose – there’s always something else you can learn.
I’m currently working towards my Google Analytics qualification which, surprisingly for someone who really isn’t a stats fan, is really interesting. I’m also working on learning conversion rate optimisation which uses Google’s Website Optimiser and a few other tools to test elements behind making visitors actually buy or get in touch with your site rather than that of a competitor’s. After I’ve got to grips with that, I want to put myself into pay per click work so that’ll be another qualification and I’m planning on spending this afternoon playing with Flash. MakeSenseOfThis.co.uk is also something of an experiment in this regard – as much as I’m writing things I want to write on it, it’s also giving me the opportunity to experiment with what I know about SEO (turns out that I know more than I thought I did but not as much as I’d like).
All told, I don’t really know what I’m planning to get out of all this extra knowledge I want to accumulate, I think I want to learn just to do it, but maybe that’s the point – I want to learn, I’ve got the opportunity to do so, so I’m going to take it. There’s always an opportunity to use what you know in any walk of life and I suppose the more you know, the more use you can be to humanity at large.
